The City of Palm Coast Utility Department recently welcomed Scout Troop 281 for an educational and hands-on tour of Water Treatment Plant 3 and Wastewater Treatment Plant 2, helping Scouts complete key requirements toward their Environmental Science and Sustainability merit badges on their quests to become Eagle Scouts. A total of 23 Scouts and parents attended the tour.
The visit provided Scouts with an inside look at how drinking water is treated, how wastewater is safely processed, and how the City's utility systems protect public health and the environment. The experience was intentionally scheduled during the students’ winter break, making participation easier while eliminating the need for long-distance travel—something the troop leader noted is often necessary to complete badges of this type.
Troop Leader Tracy Rivera praised the experience, saying, “The tour your team put on was the best I’ve ever seen. Very in-depth, interesting, and a great example of career opportunities.”
Wastewater Utility Systems Chief Operator Mike Baldwin shared his appreciation for the group, adding, “The kids were well behaved and had some good questions. Hopefully, they can all achieve those merit badges and any other goals they have set. Glad they were able to get a full look into the plants with all the sights, sounds, and smells.”
The City of Palm Coast is proud to support youth education, environmental awareness, and community engagement through interactive learning opportunities like this one.
