Palm Coast Public Works installs New Drains at Southern Recreation Center

Monday, March 18, 2024

With the City of Palm Coast’s new Southern Recreation Center now open, work has already begun on Phase 2 of the project, which will see the addition of several new amenities and enhancements. Among these is a new trench drain system for the tennis courts, a job that is being implemented by the city’s Public Works Special Projects team.

While an original attempt at creating a drain for excess clay, water and sediment on the courts was installed shortly after the inception of the tennis facilities (which originally opened in 2007 as the Palm Coast Tennis Center), years of wear and tear and an excess buildup of the clay court material since has rendered those drain insufficient in recent years, causing excess water to be confined to the courts especially on days of heavy rain. The new system is designed to provide a true, long-term solution to the problem with a concrete embankment that is engineered to easily allow excess water to drain easily to a nearby pond on the south end of Southern Recreation Center’s property.

“Our Public Works Special Projects team did a lot of research on this project to assure that it would provide the desired effect and true solution we wanted to achieve in installing this new system,” said Marc Tourville, Public Works Streets Supervisor. In completing this job internally, we were able to save a significant amount on project costs and time, but also help to enhance the experience for our residents and visitors that utilize these courts every day.”

By completing the project in-house, the city estimates a cost savings of over $40,000. The tennis courts will remain open while the project is underway, and the installation is slated to be complete in the coming weeks.
