Palm Coast Recognizes Hurricane Preparedness Week

Experts from the Weather Company and Atmospheric G2 are forecasting an active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season due to various factors, such as the record warmth of the Atlantic Ocean in the past year and the likelihood of La Niña conditions. They predict 24 named storms, with 11 becoming hurricanes and 6 reaching category three status or higher, characterized by sustained winds of at least 110 mph. This is an increase compared to the 2023 season, which saw 20 storms, seven hurricanes, and three category three or higher hurricanes.

The City of Palm Coast encourages residents to understand the risks that tropical storms and hurricanes bring and prepare by stocking up on necessities, preparing their property and homes, and developing a plan in case an evacuation order is put in place.

“Each year, hurricane season brings a possibility of risks associated with the high winds and heavy rain that these storms can bring to our area,” said Acting City Manager Lauren Johnston. “For these reasons, we encourage residents to have a keen understanding of these factors and prepare themselves ahead of time so that they can mitigate these risks and help keep their families and homes safe in case of any tropical event.”

Throughout the week, the City of Palm Coast will provide helpful tips and resources to aid residents in preparing for hurricane season. Additionally, the State of Florida will offer two sales tax holidays, from June 1st to 14th and again from August 24th to September 6th, for purchasing disaster preparedness supplies such as flashlights, radios, tarps, and portable power banks.
