Palm Coast Community Center to host Autism Spectrum Social Group
Tuesday December, 27 2022
After a successful first session in the Fall of 2022, the City of Palm Coast is set to bring back its Autism Spectrum/Differently Abled Social Group to the Palm Coast Community Center in January 2023.
The program was started by Community Center Supervisor Carrie Todd, who herself has a son that lives on the autism spectrum. Personally understanding the social challenges that come with autism, especially for young adults that have recently graduated high school and have hence been removed from much of their typical day-to-day socialization as a result, is part of what inspired Todd to start the group. The result is providing a safe space for not only socialization, but also expression, activities, and encouragement for those on the spectrum, as well as those who are differently abled and have other challenges. The first session this past Fall saw more than a few inspiring moments, with friendships forged by many of the group’s participants, a trend that is likely to continue in the next session in the new year.
“The goal for the social group is really just to bring people together so that they can develop friendships, find common interests and maybe learn new skills or hobbies,” Todd explained. “Over half of those living with autism are underemployed or unenrolled in school, so to be able to provide the social resources and support really is paramount, especially at the critical time as young adults just out of high school.”
The Autism Spectrum/Differently Abled Social Group is open to those 18 and up, and is set to begin Tuesday, January 10 from 6-7:30pm at the Palm Coast Community Center. The group meets every other Tuesday, and participants can start the program at any time. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to attend and will have a designated space to socialize together during each meeting. For more information, or to register now, click here.
