Lowering Canal Levels Storm Prep

City of Palm Coast Lowers Canal Levels in Hurricane Preparation Efforts

Wednesday July, 31 2024

Lowering the freshwater canal water levels increases the capacity to handle excessive rainfall and stormwater, significantly reducing the risk of flooding. This essential preventive action helps protect the community and its properties from potential water damage during hurricane season.

As we enter what is frequently the most active part of Hurricane Season, the City of Palm Coast's Stormwater and Engineering Department is proactively lowering freshwater canal water levels throughout the city. This initiative is a best practice and a safe, protective measure to ensure the enhanced stormwater system functions properly. The primary goal is to keep water out of residential and commercial structures during storm events.

Due to the lower water levels, residents may notice more visible aquatic vegetation in the canals. This is a normal occurrence and part of the process. The City is actively managing weed mitigation to control the growth of weeds and aquatic plants, ensuring that the canals remain clear and functional.
