In the spirit of acknowledging the significance of Black History Month, the City of Palm Coast is set to shine a light on persons and aspects of the community that have played pivotal roles in shaping Palm Coast’s cultural fabric. This year's focus represents a diverse spectrum of dedication and historical significance:

Shirley Chisholm: A trailblazer in American politics, Shirley Chisholm made history as the first woman of African descent elected to the United States Congress. Her groundbreaking achievements paved the way for future generations, inspiring change and breaking down barriers in the political landscape. She spent the final years of her life in Palm Coast and now has a trail along Pine Lakes Parkway dedicated to her legacy.

The African American Cultural Society (AACS): Located in Palm Coast, the AACS has a mission and purpose to preserve and perpetuate the cultural heritage of African Americans through educational, artistic, intellectual, and social activities and services deemed to be in the best interests of the entire community. The Center routinely hosts cultural and community outreach events and educational initiatives and has been home to several Smithsonian exhibits, fostering an environment of inclusivity and appreciation for diversity.

Howard Holley: Appointed to the Florida Museum of Black History Task Force by Florida State Representative Paul Renner, Howard Holley, a Palm Coast resident, is acknowledged for his instrumental role in preserving and showcasing African heritage. His role on the task force is to provide recommendations for the construction and operation of a Florida Museum of Black History. His commitment to documenting and sharing this rich history ensures that the community has access to valuable insights into the past, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural roots.

Bettie Eubanks: A highly regarded local artist, Bettie Eubanks’ vibrant paintings vividly depict her roles as a wife, mother, daughter, and friend. Her artwork has been featured in prestigious national exhibitions, attracting interest from private collectors and corporations. One notable contribution to Palm Coast is “Quilty,” the sixth turtle added to the Turtle Trail organized by the Palm Coast Arts Foundation. Despite her success, Bettie remains dedicated to serving her local community through teaching and various philanthropic efforts.

Black History Month serves as an invaluable opportunity for reflection on enduring achievements and contributions throughout history. The City of Palm Coast remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering inclusivity, diversity, and respect within the community.
